Tax Penalty for No Health Insurance 2020<\/h2>\n

What is the penalty for not having health insurance? A taxpayer who fails to get health insurance that meets the state\u2019s minimum requirements will be subject to a penalty of $695 per adult, (and $347.50 per child under 18) or 2.5% of annual household income, whichever is higher when they file their 2020 state income tax return in 2021. The penalty for a dependent child is half of what it would be for an adult. According to Covered California, a family of four that has no insurance for the entire year could face a penalty of at least $2,000.<\/p>\n

There are exemptions for the 2020 health insurance penalty. According to Covered California, individuals who aren\u2019t required to file California income taxes don\u2019t have to maintain minimum health insurance coverage.<\/p>\n
